Thanks to the THE LUMPER ™ blog I was inspired by snowflakes today. The blog featured Hammer Gallery Folk Art. I went clicking around and found Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley who collected snowflakes and took images of them with a photomicroscope. He took thousands of images and no two are a like!! This year my New Years Resolution (among a few others) is to re-connect myself with art by making/posting/acknowledging images on this blog. Brand Profile: Mixed Tape Design

Mixed Tape Design, founded in December of ‘07 by James Smith, Laura Lluberas, and Andrew Riddle, is a clothing brand inspired by a love for music and graphic design. When viewing their line of apparel, you’ll notice that the company has a cartoon-style element when it comes to some of the music device designs used on their tees.

Catering towards an audience of men and women from the ages of 15-30, Mixed Tape Design currently has a wide collection of screen-printed graphic tees and hoodies available for purchase. In the future, they also plan to release some cut and sew styles, along with fitted hats for the Fall/Winter seasons.

my mom wanted a mural in the backyard and at first she wanted it on the side of the house. after I convinced her not to do it on the house I told her I would paint a path way on the gate as if you could walk right through it from the brick pathway. I'm not done with it yet because I want to make it match the brick on the floor. It is an Italian inspired tuscan theme....

First Friday Art walk, BA Group Show

For being put together at the last minute the BA show looked pretty good. I wanted to take a virtual tour of all the pieces in the space but didnt get to it. There were some really nice paintings in the north gallery next to the room we were in. It was nice to be able to physically show our work rather than just a projection.

Arts major has dedicated fan base

Two Fine Arts seniors defend their major, look forward to the future

Flagler College’s Fine Arts major does not have a typical curriculum. The major is unique, and it sometimes goes overlooked as not being degree-worthy.

Regardless of what anyone thinks about it, it is a popular major at Flagler. Every semester, the major produces many talented artists whose works can be seen nationwide. This year Flagler has 97 Fine Arts majors.

When talking to art students, it’s easy to see their dedication and passion. They are also quick to stand up for their major when anything negative is thrown at them. Of course, how could one not defend a talent and skill that has been practiced since history began?

Catherine McGlinchy and Laura Lluberas are two Fine Arts students who are very passionate about their major, and quick to defend what they do.

McGlinchy, a 21-year-old senior, says she loves everything about the major except its reputation.

“The only thing I dislike about the Fine Arts major is the lack of respect that it gets,” McGlinchy said.

“It’s not a text book kind of major, so people assume that the work load is light. But really, a lot of work is involved and I don’t think enough credit is given.”

Laura Lluberas, a 23-year-old senior, agrees.

“It’s a lot harder than it seems,” Lluberas said.

“Personally, I think a text book major is easier because you have the information right in front of you, but with art, you have to find it within yourself.”

Both students have experience in several forms of art, but specialize in mixed media. Mixed media is a broad category that includes any piece of art that is made from a cluster of several different materials.

McGlinchy says that although it is rewarding to see the finished pieces, there is a lot of stress and hard work along the way.

“Pulling the creativity isn’t what’s necessarily hard because I get that from everywhere,” she said.

“But becoming physically tired from working on all the pieces is the real issue. That’s why I always tell people that you have to be devoted.”

Lluberas has a different viewpoint on the creative process.

“For me, it’s hard to be creative consistently,” she said.

“But when that happens, I’ll start reading books on other artists and things like that to generate some creativity.”

Whether they hold the same views on the creativity process or not, both students are talented and produce great artwork. Because of that, both have had the privilege of having their work displayed around St. Augustine.

Lluberas has her mixed media pieces on display at Magnum Tattoo, Fraternal Order of Orioles and Zhanras.

Last spring, five of McGlinchy’s pieces were displayed in the Flagler student show held at the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum.

Included were three mixed media pieces, one wire design and one multi-block print, which is an image made from the fusing of three separate prints. She also has two prints on display in the Ringhaver Student Center.

McGlinchy and Lluberas agree that seeing their hard work turn into actual finished pieces is a great feeling, and that the Flagler Art and Design Department has helped them improve and fine-tune their skills.

“The program is wonderful because the professors are so devoted and knowledgeable,” McGlinchy said. “They have so much to give to the students.”

Lluberas feels the program is exceptional as well, and says there is a real difference between people who just teach and people who still practice in the field. “The thing I appreciate the most and that stands out to me is that the teachers are actually working artists,” she said.

After graduation both women plan to remain and practice in the art scene. McGlinchy plans to use her art for therapeutic purposes.

“I would love to be an art therapist and use art to address emotional and physical needs,” she said.

As for Lluberas, she wants to be closely involved with an art gallery.

“I would love to be the curator of one,” she said.

“I think that would be really cool.”

Whatever routes they may take, both will be practicing something that they have a passion and dedication for, which, at the end of a long day, is really the only thing that matters.

Creativity: White box

The assignment in my creativity class is to make something from an idea that arises from collecting things in a white box. A book we read in the class that is very interesting by Twyla Tharp talks about the creativity process and how we are normally stumped when we are in a white room. Tharp talks about how she pulls inspiration from every where, even though there is nothing around that could be inspiring to others. For my final project I am working on making the actual box my project. I stuck a peep hole that I used for a past assignment at the top of the box so you have to look into a room like atmosphere. It is going to be a self-portrait.

I've started using images of animals made in the 15th century because their features are over exaggerated. In a time where certain types of animals are going extinct, I feel that bringing awareness to animals is essential.

After talking with Rachel Davis in my screen printing class about the work I have been doing this semester she brought up Richard Tuttle's work. She said the color choices on pieces of wood reminded her of his stuff. After looking him up on the internet I can see how she was reminded of him. Although all of his artwork is abstract, I can relate to a lot of it.

First Friday, Avant Garbage, Rachel Davis

This Art walk was alright. A lot of the galleries had the same stuff up as last month and Screen Arts wasn't even opened! Luckily The Lighthouse Music was playing at Magnum Tattoo.

That same night a couple of my friends help organize the Avant Garbage Eco Art Show on the west lawn at Flagler. It featured artwork from kindergarten up made entirely out of recycled materials. There were coke can airplanes, ping pong paddle heads, door knob trees and a coffee table top made out of smashed beer bottles, among other awesome stuff.

This is not the greatest of pictures but at least I have something. Although the left piece is usually horizontal, the vertical format makes them read as a set in a way. On the bio-sheet required with submission I mentioned a couple facts about pollution.

The Crisp-Ellert Museum featured artwork by Rachel Davis and a project she worked on with painters and sculptors with the concept that every artist makes prints of their work. She developed prints through collaboration with other artists based on their work.

Our assignment in portfolio along with imitating someone else's work was to work opposite of the work you normally do. The past critique I used a box and spray painted the materials in them white. So I wanted to work flat and spray paint them black. A response that I mostly got in class was that it reminded them of a charred window in a house that had just caught on fire.

This wrapped box is by one of my classmates in portfolio. She is working with string and yarn wrapping them around little boxes. She likes the idea of containment and labels them according to her life.

I ended up wrapping a miniature whiskey bottle. I tried to use the same color palette as hers and labeled mine as well. Her box was labeled pride. So I thought to name my bottle shame. I hid the title within the top of the bottle so you have to really look for it. Going along the idea of hiding in shame.

For my creativity class, we were asked to make something out of 100 pieces of paper. What I did was take an image of the earth and printed it on paper. I then cut them into 1" by 1" pieces.

The backs of the pieces have different phrases or words that had a part with polluting the earth.

To present the pieces of paper I placed them on a podium and silently projected a video ( Creation Calls - Are you listening?) of images of the earth with no influence of man right above it. The audience is invited to take a square from the pile and read it. When they read the word or phrase based on pollution, they then look at the video of the earth in all of its beauty and realize that we are killing it slowly. All awareness to protect our environment.

So this is not a very good picture but it is a stack of broken concrete. My friend and I just got out of work on Saturday and as we were walking to my car we were walking past the dumpster on treasury street right past spanish street and we saw piles of broken concrete. Me, being the weird art person, started to pile the pieces one on top of another. I was afraid that a bike cop would swing by and say that I broke all of the pieces and accuse me of vandalism. So I worked fast and only made the stack about 3 feet high. It was fun and this is the only picture I could take at the time.
